, ms. hanabusa of hawaii, would like to take in memory of the extraordinary senator. i had the pleasure of working with him in the mid 1990's when i was the deputy secretary of the department of interior, we were working on the native hawaiian lands issues. he was a remarkable individual, one that not only understood the intricacies of that very complex situation, but also had enormous passion for the native hawaiians. and so tonight i yield whatever time she might want to take to our colleague from the great state of washington -- hawaii. ms. hanabusa: thank you very much to the gentleman from california. i'm here to honor a state which is unique and as special as the person i honor. the person i rise to honor is daniel k. inouye. a person who cannot be described by a single adjective. a person whose accomplishments would cause you to pause and say, is this one person? is this one man? a person was awarded the greatest honor anyone who serves in the military can achieve, the congressional medal of honor. but it was an honor about 55 years late. from a country that questioned his loyalt

is hawaii. the house is out of session. the senate is adjourned. they are going to coming back on the 27th. that gives them five days. they have been talking about this fiscal cliff for months. last five days and they have to involves more than a trillion dollars and billions of dollars in tax hikes. how can they get it done? they won't. president on friday gave the all clear for members not to do a big package. he said, look, let's do a stopgap. in other words, let's stop everyone from having their taxes go up and do something smaller so on january 1st it's not just this big looming.... >> does that mean the president could offer extend the tax rates for six months and begin negotiating all over again beginning in january, obviously that would be the usual procrastination in washington, is that what you are talking about here? >> i think what will happen, the president will look for ways to gain the most leverage for himself. the conventional wisdom, democrats really gain power if january 1st comes along and everybody's taxes goes up. it brings revenues in the treasury and raises rates on

hours to get the conclusion. the president's plane won't take off for hawaii probably until saturday afternoon at 3:00. there'll be the pearls if you will tied to the railroad tracks. and in the end they'll get a deal this saturday. because it looks like arithmetic at this point. it'll be $500,000 a year. how do you see it? you're a games person. you know how they're looking at this thing. >> you know, i'm not sure. we usually agree, chris. i'm not sure we see it the same way. john boehner appears to be going off his own personal political cliff. what he is doing if you just look back at the last few days, clearly it seems he and the president were dealing with each other in relatively good faith. they were compromising. they were both giving up things that were making their base unhappy. and then boehner goes to plan "b" and says they're going to vote on plan "b." now he's sticking to the plan "b" yesterday, except it sounds -- last thing i heard when i went in here is he's going to attack spending cuts. because he doesn't control his caucus, chris. he's getting such major blowback

his hawaii vie cation today. at the top of this hour, expecting any minute on the senate floor that harry reid might come and give us some comment and guidance here on where to expect fiscal cliff talks to go over the next 48 hours or so. we know that the house of representatives will not be in session today but speaker bain he or she conferencing in his colleagues on a phone call this afternoon, all that up against a monday deadline. now we are told by game leadership that they will advise their numbers by saturday if they are going to bring them back into washington for a vote on anything on monday if there is a deal. there you see the united states senate is coming into session is this morning. we are going to keep an eye out for those remarks from senator reid, and of course, remarks on this fiscal cliff debacle have been moving the markets throughout the past couple of weeks, wait and see what harry reid has to say. guys, not a whole lot here to give those guys consumer confidence. >> the essence of poll takes what what we are seeing now this is no surprise, push comes to

-year-old danny inouye saw the japanese planes over his hawaii home, on december 7, 1941, his first impulse was to help so he ran to help. he had emergency medical training and so he used that training to help bind the wounds of the americans injured in the attack on pearl harbor. his second impulse, just as strong, was to defend our country. but the america of 1941 did not want his service. in fact, it considered danny and his fellow japanese americans suspect and called them enemy aliens. and confined more than 100,000 of them to internment camps. when danny inouye tried to enlist to defend his country, his country told him you are not welcome. but danny inouye did not allow anger and resentment to overcome his love of country says something remarkable about him and about our country. when in 1943 president roosevelt allowed japanese americans to enlist in the fight against nazi germany, inouye and thousands of young men answered the call. he burned with desire to defend the nation that had told him and people of his background -- quote -- "you may not serve." a nation that still

for the people of hawaii, every single day that he lived, in public service. his love of the state and every hawaiian was so abundantly clear through his massive list of accomplishments, overwhelming list of accomplishments, since hawaii became a state, dan had been working for it as the first congressman ever elected by that state, and only the third senator, and his efforts are clear in his state's roads, bridges, airports, schools, military bases, health care, oceans and almost every aspect of american life that reached to the islands. he played a truly momentous role in making hawaii what it is today. dan and i worked together on the commerce committee for 27 years. i was always -- felt very close to him, i remember sitting with him quietly, maybe sharing a joke when i was lucky enough to be sitting beside him. but most often just listening. he was thinking, waiting for discussion to ripen. he never once spoke just for the sake of it. yet when he did speak, watch out. i watched him a number of times, which i could well recite, when he took an argument that the commerce committee had let
